Water Day
Self-Story #4
I sat at my desk trying to focus on my worksheet, looking at the clock and back to my work. Counting down the minutes on the clock, trying not to look out the window. But I look out the window as I can’t help myself. Seeing a big shadow that covers the ground and looking up to see multiple humongous bounce castles getting blown up on the school field. Seeing bright orange extension cords going through classrooms windows to power up the bouncy castles and the speakers. There were also so many different actives out there, from water volleyball, hamster balls, and a slip and slid. Water day was about to start, and everyone was so excited to get out there to have fun.
The time finally came, as the bell began to ring. I started to pick up my binder and pencil case and headed out of the classroom with my friends. We walked to our lockers, grabbed our baiting suits, and headed to the change room. The change room was full of girls changing, I found a stall and changed in it. Once I got out, I put on a different tank top and shorts over top of my bikini. I walked back to my locker to put my bag in my locker, and I headed down the hall to the back doors. Everyone was excited to get out in the sun and have a fun day. Most of us girls had shirts over top of our bikinis, I did not think I was much of a big deal as there was so much to do like bouncy castles and some water things.
Walking out of the school, you could smell hotdog and hamburgers on the BBQ cooking and the hot sun on your skin. I looked around the school field to see what there was to do, I did notice that some of the guys didn’t have their shirts after they did a water activity. I felt it was fair and that the girls could just wear our baiting suit tops if we wanted. I wore my tank top over my baiting suit as I knew it was a school activity and I felt the most comfortable in it as well. Other girls felt the same way if it was fully just doing actives with water I would get upset, for having to cover up. But in this case, I did not feel like I needed to cover up I just did.

I loved this. The double standard the girls are expected to cover up while the boys can wear pretty much whatever they want. This gets me thinking about dress codes and how they inherently sexualize little girls and teenagers. I remember having days like this in school. Where the boys could wear whatever they wanted but the girls were not allowed to wear 2 piece swimsuits, and I didn’t own one so I had to wear a shirt over top, which ticked me off. I like how you wrote the story in such a way that the issue at hand seemed so normalized.
