The icing on the cake

The icing on the cake

Welcome to my journey on learning how to decorate cakes!

My first cake i made in 2020

I always wanted to learn to decorate cakes, so when I had to pick a skill to learn I thought this was the perfect opportunity. I have made cakes before and somewhat decorated them but I want to learn how to make them look more professional. To start my journey I had to buy supplies to be able to make the cakes, I bought the basic things like 3 cake pans, piping bags, piping tips and cake mix. Although I won’t be making the cake from scratch, I will be making the icing. I had to look up what kind of icing will work the best as there are many different types. But the traditional buttercream seems like it would be the best option to use for decorating.

Throughout learning how to decorate cakes, I want to learn different techniques and skills for it. The first skill I will need to learn is how to crumb coat the cake and then I will be able to practice my skills and technique. The techniques I want to learn are making flowers, ombre design, using the different piping tips and just making the cake look nice.

To start my journey I will learn the basics of decorating cakes, so starting with the crumb coat and learning how to use the piping bag well. After I have had some practice using the piping bag and basic icing coating the cake, I will decorate the cake with flowers and other piping techniques I will learn. Decorating cakes will take lots of practice and time to get to my goal. But I’m excited about this new journey and eating lots of cake!

  1. This is an awesome idea! I’ve butchered many cakes trying to decorate them myself. I’m excited to follow along!

  2. Hello Kelsey,
I should say that you had an genus idea of decorating cakes. Did you had the opportunity to work in a bakery store?. If not, I would say that you are great!. Perhaps you can decorate one for our last day of class (I am joking). Hope to see more cakes soon!.
