Week 5

This week, I focused on drawing circles of different colours to see what would occur. Going into this week’s creation, I had a feeling that the colours might bleed together. Originally, I was only going to do one circle in the middle of the page with several different paint colours. However, while creating my painting, I made the decision to also draw different circles on each corner of the page to allow for further experimentation.

I began by drawing the circles in the middle of the paper. At first, I was surprised that my orange and purple paints combined nicely together. Then, I added a green circle around the purple paint. While painting the green circle, I noticed that a portion of the purple paint was beginning to combine with the green paint. Shockingly, the blue paint applied and combined nicely with the green. I did not notice any obvious bleeding between the colours which was a relief. Lastly, I added the light yellow paint which also did not bleed into the blue paint either.

Next, I began to draw the orange circles on the bottom right and top left corners of the paper. While applying the orange paint, it seemed that it was applying nicely without much bleeding. However, I began to add red paint around these orange circles and it began to change. At first, I was unsure why the red and orange were bleeding together so much. It seemed that as I began to apply the red paint, the orange started bleeding into this circle. What also confused me was the fact that this occurred with both of the circles drawn with these colours.

Next, I painted the circles with the blue paint on the bottom left and top right corners of the paper. At first, this blue applied nicely and stayed only in one spot of the page. I decided to add purple next, thinking that these two colours would work together nicely. However, the blue and purple began to bleed together just like they did with the other colours on the previous circles. Lastly, I added a golden yellow around the purple and it seemed to stay quite well.

I feel that something confusing me this week was how much the colours on my smaller circles were combining together. With my large circles in the middle of the paper, none of the colours bled together very much. While thinking about what went wrong, I thought about the amount of paint being used. I came to the realization that the same amount of paint was being used for the smaller and big circles. Therefore, the smaller circles should have less paint because there is less space to cover. Next week, I will be sure to keep this in mind when creating my painting.
