|
Assessment:
Formative: the teacher will observe the students throughout the lesson to see what their comprehension and successes were within the lesson, and what certain areas students may need to work on to further their understanding. |
Lesson Development:
Set (5-10 minutes): Have the students come to the carpet in front of the white board for a group discussion. The questions being discussed: What do you all know about counting? (going slow, counting items, etc.) During this conversation the teacher will develop their understanding of seeing where the students are at with their counting. The discussion will then lead into the teacher showing the students another way they can count! The teacher will use magnetic circles and set them into groups of two, and ask the students what they notice the teacher is doing. The teacher will explain that they are counting by 2’s for the students who may not have guessed, then lead the conversation into how this is a much faster way to count. An example of showing the kids how much faster would be counting by one’s super slow, then counting by two’s faster. (example from Amy) The teacher will also discuss how counting by 2’s can happen within their daily life. (pairs of socks, counting people in a room, etc.) Development (15-20 minutes): After the students have had the set conversation with the teacher they will be given a worksheet and asked to go back to their desks and complete it. The worksheet is simple and only goes up to twenty, but as this is a intro lesson I felt it was good worksheet for the students. They will be asked to count the dots by two to fill in the numbers. The dots are a helpful tool because if the kids don’t know know their skip counting, the dots can be counted all together to get the answers. The worksheet is attached in the student materials. The students will be given fifteen minutes or less to complete the worksheet depending on how well it is going. Once the teacher has collected all the worksheets, this will lead into the closure “brain break” which is an educational video on counting by 2’s! Closure (5 minutes): The students will be asked to stand up from their desks and find a spot within the classroom (a spot where they can still see the front of the room) The teacher will begin playing Groovy Day (Counting by 2s) | Counting Song for Kids | The Singing Walrus – YouTube (3:55) As a brain break for the kids, but also still summarizing what we learned during the lesson today, which is counting by 2’s! |
Student Materials
Groovy Day (Counting by 2s) | Counting Song for Kids | The Singing Walrus – YouTube (3:55) Magnetic Circles (amy has some – already discussed)\ Carpet/White Board Area (PDF version of the worksheet as well) Adaptations and Key Transitions
A key transition will be moving the students from the carpet back to their desks for the work period of the lesson. The teacher must ensure it is a smooth process and the students have all their materials necessary to be successful within this math lesson. |
